Which Nightguard is Right for Your Patient

Help protect bruxing patients’ natural teeth as well as their investment in restorative work with custom nightguards from Reliable Dental Laboratory. We offer hard, soft and thermoguard night guards. Every appliance is customized based on your instructions to ensure comfort as well as an ideal fit.

Soft Nightguards

This is the most commonly used type of nightguard and used mostly for mild grinders.

PROS:

  • Most comfortable fit of all the night guards
  • Most adaptable/easy to get used to
  • Protects teeth

CONS:

  • Some people unintentionally clench on to or chew the soft material
  • Not as durable/limited lifespan
  • Not a long-term solution

Hard Nightguards

Hard nightguards are made from acrylic and are extremely rigid but durable. They can be used for very severe cases of grinding, as well as TMJ.

PROS:

  • Most durable/longer lifespan
  • Prevents teeth from shifting
  • Protects teeth

CONS:

  • Thicker than soft night guards
  • Not as comfortable as others options
  • Patients have a harder time adjusting

Thermo-Guard Nightguards

Composed of a unique elastic acrylic resin material, Thermo-Guard™ is thinner than a traditional hard/soft guard, but durable enough for the active nocturnal bruxer. Thermo-Guard becomes flexible under warm water, making it easier to insert and more comfortable to wear. When the material cools to intraoral temperature it becomes hard enough to protect your patients’ teeth and restorations.

PROS:

  • Thermo-Guard is Self-Adjusting: Heat it under warm water and the guard will mold to the teeth
  • Thermo-Guard is Less Bulky: Superior wearability and patient comfort compared to traditional hard/soft guards
  • Thermo-Guard has Faster Seating Time: Better fit reduces seating time and dimensional stability means fewer, if any, adjustments
  • Longer lifespan

CONS:

  • Typically cost more than other options
